So there we were, eager - but just a little bit scared - to try to get in touch with Samantha Fox, because we'd heard from semi-reputable sources that she just didn't want to have anything to do with porn any more. But was that true? "No, I don't think so," said Candida Royalle warily. "I know that's what people have said. But the thing you have to understand is that many of our actresses, when we first leave, we respond to the fact that it's so taboo that we're kind of seen as freaks for doing it, and it just leaves you with a whole mix of feelings. Plus, when each of us leaves, there's usually absolutely no fanfare or anything like, 'Oh, isn't it a shame? Samantha's going.' It's like, 'Oh, well, who cares? Who's next?'" Royalle has been in touch with Fox all these years, though, and promised she'd relay the message that we wanted to talk to her. But still, we weren't prepared when we picked up the phone at 10 till six one evening and heard, "Hello, this is Samantha Fox. Did you want to speak to me?" Yes, we did... and we were more or less ready to talk to her. We'd found, for instance, that she'd done just a little over 100 titles, stretching from 1975 to '84, including such "Golden Age" classics as Amanda By Night, Babylon Pink, Devil in Miss Jones and Her Name Was Lisa. And though Jack & Jill 2, with Jack Wrangler, was the last film she's proud of, Fox knows she did one more after that. "I was detoxing at the time from alcohol and drugs when I went to finish off that last movie," Fox recalls. "I was actually in detox mode and had walking pneumonia and didn't know it, and on the way back in the plane, they moved three passengers for me, even though I wasn't in first class, because I had to get horizontal. I had a 102-degree fever, and I was really ill for a long time after that. So my last movie was sort of a blur... I realized I had to close the door on porn and see if I could start from scratch." We also knew that she shared an apartment in New York City for a while with retired performer Kelly Nichols. "She was just a really good roommate," Nichols remembers. "I'd never seen her mad. She was always really even-tempered. She was always a lady. She was funny as hell. She and I loved to eat. We used to work out together, and one of the fun things we did, we used to have [actor] George Payne come over and give us massages, and he had this one trick: He would strap an Hitachi [vibrator] under his jaw, had a chin-strap running around his head, and then we would lay down side-by-side and he would give us head, and we would make comments - 'That's pretty good' - like commenting on his new invention." Fox herself laughs at the recollection... and it reminds here of the good old days when she and Nichols used to hang out with some of the early distributors - Don Davis, Dave Friedman and Irv Glass - and (according to Nichols) match them drink-for-drink on a nightly basis. "We'd [Fox and Nichols] look at each other at the end of the night and hop into bed together, and these guys couldn't keep up with us," Fox says. So what's Fox doing now? "I teach for internationally-known health clubs, and I have some private people that I see one-on-one for body work," Fox confides coyly. Fox's fondest memories, however, are of the two main porn men in her life: Director Chuck Vincent - "I just loved him. We bonded instantly. I did my first film for Chuck [Bad Penny]" - and of course, her lover, Bobby Astyr. Fox met Astyr in 1978 on the set of Double Your Pleasure, where she was still the hot young thing... but she remembers Bobby as being something of a jerk. "This guy with curly hair, a little shorter than me, comes springing over and he goes, 'Hey, tits, how are you doing? I hear you're the new hot chick on the block.' And I thought, 'Oh, spare me!'" But then she invited Astyr and another actor that she was particularly attracted to, to a party at the house of her former madam. "So here we were at this party," she recalls, "and I got really drunk, and this guy I had the crush on started going off with other people, and Bobby was the only one paying attention to me." The couple courted for two years, and finally wound up sharing neighboring apartments for nearly 24 years, with Fox nursing her ill mate for months before he died of cancer last April. And now? "I'm a recluse," Fox says of herself. "I'm a dinosaur." All we can say is, we're damned glad to have discovered her not-yet-fossilized bones. - Mark Kernes
